Buds on a common rhododendron (Rhododendron ponticum) bush

The Common Rhododendron or Rhododendron ponticum is a dense shrub growing to 5m tall. It is an evergreen with violet/purple flowers. It has been extensively cultivated in western Europe as an ornamental plant from the eighteenth century and in some areas is now considered an invasive species because of its dense, smothering undergrowth.
