Fat cells. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of adipocytes (fat cells, brown) from bone marrow tissue. Amongst the adipocytes is a macrophage (purple), a type of white blood cell. Adipocytes store energy as an insulating layer of fat and the majority of the cell's volume is taken up by a large lipid droplet.
