When this is allowed, and it is furtherconsidered how easily the revenge of the meanest peson may be executed even upon the high-est, it should, methinks, keep people upon theirguard, and prevail with them not to persecuteor be injurious to any one. The moral turpi-tude of doing wrong is suflicient to influenceevery brave honest man, and to secure hira fromharbouring even the least thought of it in hisbreast: but the knave and the coward shouldweigh the piesent argument, and, before theyattempt the least injury, be assured of thistruth, that nothing is more sweet, nor scarceany thing so easy to compass, as FABLE CIV. 215
