This painting, which shows the Virgin Mary with her son Jesus Christ, surrounded by the Holy Innocents. The Holy Innocents are the young male children of Bethlehem, who, according to the Gospel of Matthew, the ruler Herod had slaughtered so that a King of the Jews would not take over his kingdom, as was foretold by the Magi, the three wise men who came to visit Jesus with his mother soon after his birth in Bethlehem.
