A Spartan youth slays a Helot and walks indifferently away. By Donn Philip Crane (1878-1944). The helots were a subjugated population that constituted a majority of the population of Laconia and Messenia, which were territories ruled by Sparta. The need to keep the helot population in check and prevent rebellion was one of the main concerns of the Spartans. Helots were ritually mistreated and humiliated.
