Surface-mount circuit board. Coloured scanning electron micrograph of a circuit board in a surface-mount device (SMD). Surface-mount technology (SMT) is a method of constructing electronic circuits with components (SMCs, Surface Mounted Components) mounted directly onto the surface of printed circuit boards (PCBs). This method has largely replaced the through-hole construction method, of fitting components with wire leads into holes in the circuit board, as it allows PCBs and their components to be much smaller. Magnification: x13 when printed 10 centimetres wide.
