Polarised light micrograph of a radial section of mature wood of Douglas or Oregon pine (Pseudotsuga menziesii, syn Pseudotsuga taxifolia). It is an evergreen fir in the Pinaceae family native to North America. Uniseriate medullary rays, which function to pass nutrients and water laterally, are seen running horizontally. Tracheids with uniseriate pits run vertically. Magnification: x40 at 10cm wide.
