Common Wildebeest resting in the semiarid environment of the dry season in Ngorongoro Crater Tanzania

Common Wildebeest resting on a short plain in semiarid environment, Ngorongoro Crater during dry season. White-bearded Wildebeest, Connochaetus taurinus. A large, bearded antelope, deep chested, short-necked, with high shoulders and thin legs. It has cow like, smooth horns with enlarged boss, wider and much thicker in males. The short, glossy coat is slate grey to dark brown, lighter above and has vertical stripes of longer hair; the face is black, as well as mane, tail and stripes. These animals live in grassland, grazing on the short green grass day and night. They live in small family herds; remaining migratory all year in Serengeti Territorial bulls control mobile territories, holding up cows and their young, while nursery herds move freely through.
