An old engraving of an 1800s traveler, traveller hoist – an overhead or bridge crane, found in factories, boatyards and workshops. It is from a Victorian mechanical engineering book of the 1880s. The crane has parallel runways with a traveling bridge between. A hoist, the lifting component of a crane, travels along the bridge. Some types are called a gantry crane or a goliath crane. The illustration shows an end view with a worker moving a load taken held on chains attached to a ‘crab’ able to move sideways on the moveable beam. This beam moves lengthways on side-rails (shown in the inset).

An old engraving of an 1800s traveler, traveller hoist, a type of overhead crane or bridge crane, found in factory, boatyard and workshop environments. It is from a Victorian mechanical engineering book of the 1880s. The crane consists of parallel runways with a traveling bridge spanning the gap. A hoist, the lifting component of a crane, travels along the bridge. If the bridge is rigidly supported on two or more legs running on a fixed rail at ground level, the crane is called a gantry crane or a goliath crane. The illustration shows an end view with a worker moving a load taken held on chains attached to a ‘crab’ able to move sideways on the moveable beam or bridge. This beam in can be moved lengthways on rails on each side (shown in the inset).
