Girder bridge at Tavronitis was the first target for German paratroopers in the Battle of Crete 1941. It still bears the scars

This girder and wood bridge over the Tavronitis river was the first objective of the first German paratroopers to land during the Battle of Crete in 1941. After its capture they sheltered under it. It still bears numerous scars from the fighting. Today it has been replaced by a modern road bridge 20 metres away but has been left in position as a memorial
