Distinguishing between friendly and enemy forces can be difficult in war, and World War II posed its own basic battlefield challenges. Military personnal needed to be able to quickly recognize allied aircraft; a matter of life and death for both soldiers and pilots apparent when the casualties of the British Advanced Air Striking Force in France amounted to 8 aircraft shot down by the Germans, and 9 shot down by the French. To help rectify the problem of friendly fire, the aircraft identification charts were designed.
