Horn-faced bees mating. The hornfaced bee (Osmia cornifrons) has been used commercially for several decades in Japan to pollinate apples, as it is now in the US. A single hornfaced bee can visit 15 flowers in a minute. This solitary bee nests in reeds, tubes and holes in wood. These bees are resting on a wood block with holes drilled for nesting. Mason bee is a common name for species of bees in the genus Osmia, of the family Megachilidae. They are named from their habit of making compartments of mud in their nests, which are made in hollow reeds or holes in wood usually made by wood boring insects, unless an artificial nest such as the one shown is provided for the bees
