Hindu Woman Immolating Herself on Husband's Pyre

A late 19th century engraving of a Hindu woman immolating herself on her husband's funeral pyre. This practice, called sutee or sati, was banned several times over history, with the latest ban in place since 1829. The name comes from the goddess Sati, also known as Dakshayani, who killed herself because she didn't like the way her father was humiliating her living husband Shiva.
