This image may not be used in educational posters Flower's reproductive structures, computer artwork. At centre is the female part of the flower, the carpel (green), which consists of a stigma (top), style (down centre) and ovary (bottom). Surrounding the carpel are the male stamens (five seen here). Each stamen consists of a filament (stalk) and an anther (brown) which contains pollen grains (yellow, the male sex cells of the plant). Fertilisation takes place when pollen lands on the stigma and grows down the style to the ovary where the fertilisation of the ovules takes place.
