The beedy-eyed penguin. Edinburgh, UK: THESE CLOSE-UP portaits show the glory of Edinburgh Zoo?s animals. One image gets close and personal with Brigadier Sir Nils Olav III, the world?s only knighted penguin. Nils Olav is a king penguin who is the mascot and colonel-in-chief of the Norwegian King?s Guard. Another image shows a pygmy hippo staring down the camera. The pygmy hippo stands at only three feet tall and weighs up to 600 pounds, significantly less than the 3,000 pound normal hippo. These images were captured by professional photographer Gary Cox (52) at the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland?s Edinburgh Zoo using a Canon EOS 80D camera. ?I am always ready for anything when it comes to zoo photography. You can never guarantee what will happen and how the animals will react,? said Gary. ?This is part of the joy of this type of photography. ?I attempt to capture poses that are a little different from the norm and it is always a bonus if they look directly at the camera. You can never rely on this though. ?People do often ask me how close I was to the animals in order to get the shots I do. Well, I am only a paying visitor like everyone else with no special access. ?I do make sure I get into the right position wherever possible and I have a decent zoom lens. The distance can be anything from a few feet away to the back of a large enclosure. ?However, by having a steady hand and cropping the photo it may appear that I was standing next to mediadrumimages/GaryCox
