An early 1900's depiction of what the asteroid 433 EROS might look like at close was the first asteroid ever studied from orbit by a modern space probe. It was originally discovered by German astronomer Carl Gustav Witt at the Berlin Urania Observatory on 13 August 1898 (confirmed by Auguste Charlois at Nice Observatory. A NASA spacecraft NEAR Shoemaker landed upon it in 2001
