In the American Revolution, British general John Burgoyne was defeated at Bennington, Vermont (pictured here).

Bennington is a town in southwest Vermont. It was founded in 1761. In the American Revolution (1775-1783), British general John Burgoyne, coming from the north in October 1777, captured Ticonderoga, was defeated at Bennington, and then halted near present-day Saratoga Springs—the so-called Saratoga Campaign. This engraving, which dates to 1876, depicts the Battle at Bennington.
