(Plate XIII. Fig. 49.) Bladder species derives its name from the inflated appearanceof the calyx, which is an exceedingly pretty object. Wholeplant smooth, stem erect, leaves ovate and long. Elowerspure white, and numerous, petals deeply divided. The youngshoots were formerly gathered as a vegetable, and have astrong smell of green peas. In the islands of the Mediter-ranean it is commonly brought to table, and in severalinstances, where famine threatened the inhabitants, theyhave been saved from starvation by this plant.
