Light micrograph of a cross section through an emergent leaf of a giant knotweed (Fallopia sachalinensis) plant. Giant knotweed is a herbaceous perennial that forms dense thickets with stems growing up to 5 metres in one season. Leaves can grow to a length of 40cm. It can hybridise with Japanese knotweed to produce an extremely invasive knotweed F. x bohemica. Magnification: x13 at 10cm size.
