Italy Abruzzi, National Park of the Gran Sasso,Province of L'Aquila Campo Imperatore area the park contains three distinct mountain ranges: the majestic chain of limestone dolomite Gran Sasso, the highest summit of the Apennines, the Corno Grande (d. 2912), whose base has survived the Calderone Glacier, the southernmost of Europe ; the Monti della Laga, in the northern sector of the park, they also reach a large proportion of Mount Gorzano (d. 2458), and up the mountain complex arenaceous-marly higher and extended the Apennines to the north-east of the Park , the Twin Mountains, two limestone mountains affected by complex karst features. Located in central Italy, the Park covers two distinct biogeographic regions: "Euro-Siberian" and "Mediterranean". This particular location, together with the lithological diversity of the mountains and high odds, makes the area a protected area that has a high biological richness. In fact, in the park are about 2300 higher plant species, over one fifth of the European flora, and more than one third of the Italian heritage of flora. As for the animal kingdom, in point is the case of amphibians, with fourteen species present including the only case in Italy, four species of newts. Moreover, the mountains of the Park are a real biogeographical threshold between the north and south of the country here, in fact, some Mediterranean species reach the northern limit of distribution, while others, especially plants and animals of arctic-alpine origin, the southern one.
