These water areas were almost completely exposed to the sun and the winds with very little protection from the walls of the rock. At the time we made our collection (August 28, 1948, 2:30 ), the temperature of the water in the exposed depressions was 28° C. Some of the smaller depressions gave the appearance of having dried out, others were filled with a dense suspension of blue-green algae which gave a dark green appearance to the water. The green suspension which we collected proved to consist, on the basis of fresh weight, of 1 per cent of blue-green algae and was almost completely free of other organisms. The suspending medium at the time of collection had a pH of , but contained only traces of bicarbonate and carbonate, also only traces of sodium and Please note that these images are extracted from scanned page images that may have been digitally enhanced for readability - coloration and appearance of these illustrations may not perfectly resemble the original Marine Biological Laboratory (Woods Hole, Mass. ); Marine Biological Laboratory (Woods Hole, Mass. ).
