Salman Rushdie Protesters hold images of Iranian Leader Ayatollah Khomeini (11 February 1979 – 3 June 1989), Anti Rushdie Rally, Bradford GB 1990.

Protests followed the fatwa (14 February 1989) calling for the murder of British Indian novelist Salman Rushdie, after the initial book burning (9 January 1989). Ayatollah Khomeini was founder of the Islamic Republic of Iran and the leader of the 1979 Iranian Revolution, which saw the overthrow of the last shah of Iran, Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, and the end of the 2,500 year old Persian monarchy.
