James Scott, 1st Duke of Monmouth fleeing after defeat in the Monmouth Rebellion It was an attempt to overthrow Roman Catholic James II who became King upon the death of Charles II in 1685. Monmouth claimed to be rightful heir to the throne and attempted to displace James II.
