Osceola died in 1838 of malaria at Ft Moultrie South Carolina and was buried at the fort His head was removed and a plaster cast was made of his fine features This is a copy of the original plaster cast in the visitor center at Paynes Prairie Preserve State Park Osceola was of mixed white Native American heritage
