15th Century Rye House in Hertfordshire, England on the banks of the River Lea, was the centre of a plot to kill King Charles II and his younger brother, the Duke of York, the future James II in 1683. When the king and duke returned from Newmarket races to London the royal party would pass down a narrow road near the house, where it would be straightforward to ambush and kill them. The ambush never happened, but the failed plot was discovered and the conspirators were arrested.

The Rye House built in the mid-15th century, on the east bank of the Lea, by Sir Andrew Ogard, a Danish knight, was the centre of the Rye House Plot, a plan to kill King Charles II (1630-85) and his younger brother, the Duke of York, the future James II (1633-1701)at the gates of a Hertfordshire manor house in 1683. The scheme was that the king and duke would be heading back from Newmarket races to London and would pass the house. There was a narrow road nearby, down which the royal party would have to travel where it would be straightforward to ambush and kill them. The ambush never happened, but the failed plot was discovered and the conspirators were arrested.
