After an incubation period of 45 to 55 days and a several days long ascent through the sand the hatchling olive ridleys (Lepidochelys olivacea) emerge all together. They orient themselves by the brightness of the horizont above the ocean and they are always at risk of being eaten by birds, crabs or later by fish. Beeing in a large group provides a bit of protection.
