Newtondale Spring, North Yorkshire: a mineral rich healing spring, lime & iron-bearing (chalybeate), orange-coloured with a rusty metallic taste.

A mineral rich healing spring: chalybeate (iron bearing, orange-coloured, with a rusty metallic taste and lime. Probably in use in prehistoric times, certainly since the Roman period. Surviving stonework is probably from two cisterns (and a well house long gone) built around the spring in C17th for the benefit of bathers. Used regularly throughout 1700s as a healing well and part of a midsummer Sunday fair. In 1734 a Dr Short recommended the waters for restoring weak limbs & joints. Lime deposits were sold as 'marl' to Goatland farmers to sweeten their acid moorland soils. Complex fell into disuse and disrepair in 1800s. Conservation work, access path and viewing platform around spring pool late 20th century.
