First plants rooted in pahoehoe lava on Big Island, Hawaii, USA.

First plants rooted in pahoehoe lava on Big Island, Hawaii, USA. This is a section of a relatively young pahoehoe on the east rift zone of Kīlauea Volcano in Hawaii,USA. A pahoehoe flow usually advances as a series of small lobes and toes breaking out from a cooled crust. Pahoehoe lava flows long distances in lava tubes with minimum heat loss and low viscosity. The surface texture of pahoehoe is very unique with wide range of bizarre shapes. One of the first small plants rooting on the lava is fern. The first larger plants are the Noni and the Ohia tree.
