Sheerness, Kent, UK. 31st Oct, 2017. UK Weather: an overcast start to the day in Sheerness. Pictured: the Grotto adjoining the Ship on Shore pub. Legend has it in 1848, the Lucky Escape ran aground east of Sheerness. Locals thought their luck was in when barrels thought to contain whisky, began to wash ashore. To the disappointment of the publican and locals they turned out to be Portland cement, so the resourceful publican used them to build the adjoining grotto (now grade II listed).
