I enclose a plant which I found growing quite plentifully on the river bottom, on which bees are working very strongly. What is it ? [The plant that Mr. Armstrong sends is an aster, of which there are very many varieties that bloom in September. The one in question is exceedingly common on river bottoms, and is known by some bee- keepers in central Illinois as '? ; Cook says (pages 380-3S3): "But the nu- merous species of asters so are replete with precious nectar, and with favorable seasons make the apiarist, who dwells in their midst, jubilant, as he watches the bees which fairly flood the hives with the rich and delicious honey,"— H.
