The German inscription for this 1899 image reads in English: “Christ in Gethsemane by Hans Thoma, after the original 1894.” The Agony in the Garden of Gethsemane was an episode in the life of Jesus—the name of the man who Christians believe was the son of God, and whose teachings are the basis of Christianity—which appears in the four canonical gospels, between the Farewell Discourse at the conclusion of the Last Supper and Jesus' arrest.
