Colourful tradtitional bangles for sale at the Sardar Bazaar in the centre of the Rajasthani city of Jodhpur, India. Still run by the Maharajah of Jodhpur it is a captivating place dominated by the Maherangarh fort perched on a 125m high hill above the old city. Once known as Marwar, or the Land of Death, the Blue City is now a vibrant , colourful travellers destination dominated by the 16th century fort. Founded in 1459 by Rao Jodha, a Rajput chieftan, the city grew out of trading profits in sandalwood, dates and copper. Now a chaotic jumble of lanes and open sewers with cattle roaming freely it is a shoppers paradise of brass , furniture, jewellery and spices.
