Washington Irving (1783-1859) was an American author, best known for Rip Van Winkle and The Legend of Sleepy Hollow.


Washington Irving (1783-1859) was an American author. He began contributing essays to periodicals, styled Letters of Jonathan Oldstyle, Gent. in 1802-1803. He wrote several works on the American West. In his later years he lived at Sunnyside in Tarrytown, New York. He was one of the first American writers to win wide recognition aboard. Among his best known tales are Rip Van Winkle and The Legend of Sleepy Hollow. He was noted for effortlessly smooth style, good humor, and playful satire. This illustration dates to 1899.
