Viral research. Scientist at the National Reference Centre for Arboviruses and Viral Haemorrhagic Fevers examining blood samples in an airflow cabinet. Air is sucked into the cabinet and then filtered before being recirculated. This prevents contamination of the laboratory. This laboratory receives blood samples from patients in Africa with diseases such as dengue fever and ebola. It isolates the viruses that cause the diseases and sequences their genomes. This aids in research for diagnosis techniques and treatment, and tracks any mutations in the viruses.
