The main feature of the design is an oak-tree, the spreading branches and foliage of which overshadow figures of Labour, Justice, and Prosperity. The base consists of a tripod pedestal rising from ledges of rock, and surrounded at the bottom with fern inscription [reads:] "Presented to Richard Birkin, Esq., , by the Magistrates and Council of the town of Nottingham, as a token of their appreciation of the valuable and important services rendered during his respective mayoralties in 1850, 1855, 1862, 1863, Feb. 17, ; On the plateau of the pedestal, the figure of Labour is represented resting on a spade; to the right of this figure is that of Justice in classic costume, the right hand resting on the fasces and the left holding up the beam and scales. The third figure, Prosperity, is shown with oak springing from the centre throws out its foliage very gracefully, forming a canopy of silver foliage. There are six branches, at the ends of which either glasses or tapers can be fixed at pleasure'. From "Illustrated London News", 1864.
