. Edible and poisonous plants of the Caribbean region . 25. Nance Byrsonima spp. This berry is eaten raw, usually by the children. Occasionally it is on sale in country markets. The bush or small tree is common in dry places and at low altitudes. Its flowers are bright yellow but turn red as they fade. The round yellow berry is half an inch in diameter and has a flavor similar to that of an apple. The flesh is sweet and juicy. In the British West Indies the nance is called golden spoon; in Central America nanche; in Cuba peralejo; in Puerto Rico maricao; and in Colombia yuco and chaparro.
