Whiplash. Illustration showing the movement of the skull and cervical spine during whiplash. When the neck is bent forcibly and violently backwards and then forwards, or vice versa, for example in the impact of a car accident, there may be injury to the spinal joints of the neck, to the spinal cord, to ligaments and soft tissues. Commonly pain and neck stiffness are worse 24 hours after the injury. Treatment may involve an orthopaedic collar, muscle-relaxant drugs, and physiotherapy.
