Interrogation of young Royalist by a local committee of surveillance during French Revolution

During the French Revolution, the revolutionary government enacted a series of severe regulations that curtailed civil liberties. Many people were called in for questioning and many were guillotined. The theme of this painting by an 1800s artist is the interrogation of a young Royalist by a local committee of surveillance. This period known as the Terror began in the fall of 1793 and ended in the summer of 1794.
