Antique photograph, taken in the early 1900s in England, UK. Two professional artists, May Chatteris Winder, née Fisher (1874 - 1910), and her husband, landscape painter William Smallwood Winder (1869 - 1910), both founder members of the Lake Artists Society in the English Lake District in 1904. Unusually for the time, May was a professional working woman who continued with her career after marriage. Black and white version of sepia original.

Professional artists of the late Victorian and Edwardian eras, May Chatteris Winder née Fisher (1874 - 1910), and her husband, William Smallwood Winder (1869 - 1910). May was an illustrator of children's books, known professionally as May Chatteris Fisher prior to her marriage to William in 1904 and as May Chatteris Winder afterwards. In 1901 and 1904, she illustrated two books of children's fairy tales for the publishers Sherratt & Hughes: 'Ignoramus' by E. Todd and 'Pixie' by Frances Reddaway, respectively. She continued to work after her marriage and after the birth of her only child, Arthur, in 1905. William, a landscape painter whose paintings of the English Lake District are still on sale, was elected as a member of the Royal Society of British Artists in 1903 and exhibited at the Royal Academy. Both May and William were founding members of the Lake Artists' Society, established in October 1904 by a group of painters brought together by their love of the English Lake District landscape. After their marriage, May and William lived on the edge of the Lake District, at Staveley, near Kendal, Cumbria (formerly Westmorland).
