Sport in Argentina in the 1940s – here a tennis match is taking place at the Buenos Aires Lawn Tennis Club, Buenos Aires, Argentina in 1941. It is between the Argentinian top-ranked player, Alejo Russell (right) and Elwood Cooke from the USA. The event was attended by a good-sized crowd. Alejo Domingo Russell (1916 –1977) competed in the 1930s–50s. He reached the quarter-finals of the US National Championships in 1942 and 1945 and was a beaten finalist in the mixed doubles in 1942, partnering Patricia Todd. Elwood Thomas Cooke (1913–2004) was an amateur American player in the 1930s–40s. He was ranked in top 10 in the USA in that era and was as high as world number 8 in the amateur rankings in 1939. At Wimbledon Cooke reached the singles final in 1939, where he was beaten by Bobby Riggs – but he won the doubles title that year with Riggs. The Buenos Aires lawn Tennis Club is located next to Lisandro de la Torre station, its home since 1920. This photograph is from a print from a scrapbook/photo album assembled in the 1940s/50s by an Argentinian sports enthusiast who collected old photographs and newspaper cuttings. Handwritten captions were added to the photos. This image is from a relatively small original and will look soft if used at too large a size – a vintage 1940s photograph.
