Roger Williams secured land from the Narragansetts and founded Providence Plantation in Rhode Island.

English Protestant theologian Roger Williams (died 1683) founded the Colony of Providence Plantation after fleeing religious persecution by the Massachusetts Bay Colony. He first had gone to the Wampanoag and the chief Massasoit, but later had to leave Massachusetts. He then went to Canonicus and Miantonomi, (pictured here) chief sachems of the Narragansetts, who befriended him. He secured land from them and founded Providence Plantation in Rhode Island.
