A branch of red Mediterranean coral displayed on a crystal base (Strait of Gibraltar - Morocco). The red coral (Corallium rubrum) is the carbonate of lime axis of a Gorgonian stem (Gorgonidae - Alcyonaria Group), chiefly found in the Mediterranean Sea. It lives in semi-dark habitats in the coralligenous zone of sublittoral hard bottoms. Gathered commercially for jewellery,Torre del Greco (Italy) is the main centre of coral-working industries.
