Systematic plant beds in the restored garden of Carl von Linné, Carl Linnaeus, in Uppsala, Sweden. Linnaeus is justifiably renowned for his vigorous adoption of the binomial system for naming species. His garden in Uppsala was laid out during his tenure of the chair of medicine at Uppsala university (1741-1778 ). The beds were used to teach his students the principles of his sexual system of classification of plants, based on the numbers of stamens and carpels in the flower. This system was not widely adopted, and Linnaeusâ enduring reputation rests largely on his laying down of rules for the naming of species. The picture shows a series of beds separated by conveniently wide paths, as specified by Linnaeus. The blue flower (below centre) is Tradescantia, a member of the family Commelinaceae, characterised by 6 stamens and 1 carpel.
