Dog tooth grouper, Epinephelus caninus, from the Mediterranean Sea, Malta.


Epinephelus caninus is found in the eastern Atlantic from Portugal to Angola, including the Mediterranean and Canary Islands in depths between 30 to 400m. These fishes live close to sandy and muddy bottoms, where they search for smaller fishes and invertebrates. Reports state that this species can reach a total weight of 78 kg, and therefore these fish are popular among sports fisher and commercial fishing. They can reach an estimated age of 75 years.
