Osun Osogbo: A section of the King's Market where devotees buy livestocks for rituals and sacrifice
The city of Osogbo is a vibrant city of culture. Osogbo, meaning “The wizard of the forest,” was founded in 1670 when Laaroye, king of Ipole Omu, a community plagued by drought enlisted the help of his friend and hunter Olutimehin to search for a stream. The hunter’s discovery of a river during his hunting expedition led to the migration of the town and its people to the bank of the river after a series of consultations and divination. Osogbo—derived from the voices of water spirits appeasing the deity (“Oso igbo rora” meaning “Wizard of the forest, take it easy,”)—a city of vibrant art and culture, is renowned as a center of dyeing, hence its appellation as “Osogbo Ilu aro”—Osogbo, the town of dye.
