No. 41 LOUIS METTLIXG FRENCH ( 1847-1894) G YPSY The head and shouldersof a young gypsy wears a picturesquecostume of pink andwhite, trimmed with sil-ver and hung with smallmetal buttons. Aroundher throat is a brownkerchief, knotted looselyand falling upon herbreast. Her dark hair isunbound and falls uponher shoulders, framing aswarthy face with fullred lips and dark lustrouseyes which gaze with a somewhat defiant expression straightat the spectator. Signed at the loner left, Height, 9 inches; width. 7 inches. No. 42S. W. VAX SCHAICK HEAD OF A TURK The head and shoulders of a noble-faced old musselman. Hewears a loose, flowing robe of black over a white linen shirtopen at the neck to show his swarthy chest. On his head is acrimson turban and his face is fringed by a tufted grey beardand whiskers. His head is slightly raised, his narrow eyeslooking up out of the picture to the left, whence the light pro-ceeds, casting deep shadows on his cheek. Signed at the loner left, Van Schaick, 1881.
