The tower at the House of Castellane Champagne in Epernay, France

The house of Castellane was established in Epernay by the Viscount Florens de Castellane, heir of one of the oldest families in France in 1895. He chose as his logo the red 'Saint-Andrew's' cross as a tribute to the standard of the oldest regiment in the Champagne region. His cousin Boni de Castellane was in charge of distribution in Paris and quickly made it the Champagne of choice among the Parisian elite in the Belle-Epoque period. In 1999 de Castellane entered the Laurent-Perrier group and is still owned by the Nonancourt's family today. Epernay in the Marne department of France is best known as the principal entrepot for Champagne wines. Production of the equipment and raw materials used in the Champagne industry is a major source of local employment as is brewing and sugar and the production of hats and caps. The most famous street in Epernay is the Avenue de Champagne featuring the leading Champagne manufacturers.
