A Greenlandic narwhal tusk,circa 1920 Impressive tusk with beautifully grown,helical structure. Strong tip,the surface slightly rough in some parts with bright patina. Length according to the CITES certificate 220 cm,according to a check measurement by Hermann Historica 216 cm. The narwhal(Monodon monoceros)belongs to the Monodontidae. As early as during the Renaissance,the tusks of these marine mammals were thought to be the horns of the legendary unicorn and were attributed supernatural powers.
