Colourful Tuck 'Oilette' postcard view of Edwardian people along tree-lined Lord Street, Southport, Merseyside, UK, 1903
Raphael Tuck and Sons 'Oilette' postcard 7480 showing Edwardian people in Lord Street, Southport. Tuck's Oilette Series of cards appeared in 1903, and, although the card bears no post-mark, the style of clothes suggests the card dates to that period. On the reverse the card includes the information: 'Fifty years ago Lord Street was a long struggling road with a few houses and gardens; now it is a broad and beautiful boulevard with fine buildings and shady trees. There are handsome shops here, under whose verandahs the bargain-hunter can defy any weather.' It is said that Lord Street is the inspiration behind the tree-lined boulevards of Paris, Napoleon 111, Emperor of France in 1851, having had lodgings in Lord Street in 1846. Tram lines are visible in the road surface, although the absence of overhead wires points to horse-drawn trams. Electrification of the Southport tram network began in 1900. The view looks towards Nevill Street from a location opposite the HSBC Bank at 331 Lord Street. The shops left of shot currently include a Cafe Nero and Lakeland clothes shop. The right of shot is now the colonnades and memorial gardens of the Southport War Memorial. War looks a long way off to the people in this view.
