White house on Caye Caulker, Belize

The people of Caye Caulker live in very modest, small timber homes or bungalows, often in very close proximity to each other. Most houses have corrugated iron roofs which can be hot in summer and noisy in the rain. Each house is raised off the ground to give some ventilation underneath the house and also to protect from excessive rain and flooding which often results due to the island being completely flat and there being a lack of drainage. The houses are often painted in bright colours.
